Sutter Podiatrist Travels on Medical Mission to Mexico - Sept 11, 2008

FAIRFIELD - Giving back to the global community is just something Nancy Kaplan, DPM, sees as a responsibility of her trade.

The podiatrist, who practices with Solano Regional Medical Group, the multispecialty medical group affiliated with Sutter Regional Medical Foundation, is traveling to Sinaloa , Mexico, September 12-14 to help staff a charity clinic for the underserved. The medical mission is in collaboration with LIGA International, a non-profit organization that provides free health care and education to Mexican communities since 1934.

"Originally I went into medicine and wanted to do charity work in the Latin community. I think when you have a skill such as being a physician, it's part of your responsibility to help, to take care of the village," Dr. Kaplan says. "I am so fortunate, and for me it is part of existing and having this skill in society. You give back."

Dr. Kaplan says she will likely attend to children with club foot or congenital deformities. She will also see everything from hammer toes, bunions, ingrown toenails and other regular foot problems that people of these communities can't afford to treat.

As a medical student, Dr. Kaplan participated in several medical missions, traveling sometimes three to four times a year. It has been nearly a decade since she last volunteered in Mexico. "It is one of the things I love to do the most, I love working with third world countries for people who don't have medical care," says Kaplan. "It is very gratifying."
